What Plansight's AI Reads
Plansight's AI works with PDF documents only. It does not read Word documents or Excel files.
Important: Plansight may have difficulty processing image-based PDFs — documents that are scanned or saved as images rather than text. If your PDF doesn't contain selectable text, AI extraction may not work as expected.
Supported Benefit Types
Plansight's AI can extract data across the following lines of coverage:
- Medical
- Dental
- Vision
- Basic Life
- Voluntary Life
- Short-Term Disability
- Long-Term Disability
- Worksite products, including: Hospital Indemnity, Critical Illness, Cancer, and Accident
Note: Plansight does not use AI for small group community-rated plans. Because that data is structured and predefined, AI extraction is not needed for those plan types.
Where Plansight Uses AI
1. Plan Build Wizard (Employer Plan Section)
When building a plan in the employer plan section, you can upload PDFs directly through the Plan Build Wizard. Plansight's AI will read the document and extract relevant plan data.
Extracted fields are placed in a Pending status until you review them. Once you've reviewed the data through the Smart Sheeting process, you can mark the plan as complete.
2. Quote Ingestion (Carrier & Broker Uploads)
Plansight automatically reads uploaded quote PDFs — whether uploaded by a broker inside a presentation or by a carrier directly. For each document, Plansight identifies and creates a source for every recognized quote within it.
Here's how the process works:
- A quote PDF is uploaded (by you or by the carrier).
- Plansight processes the document and extracts the quote data.
- A new quote source is placed in Pending status.
- You select the recognized quote from a dropdown under Quote Sources — useful when a single document contains multiple quotes.
- Once a source is selected, Plansight populates the plan fields automatically. Fields filled by AI are highlighted in purple, so you always know what was extracted versus manually entered.
- Review the data and update the status as you work through it.
Quote Task List & Statuses
When a carrier uploads a quote, you'll receive an email notification with a direct link. If you're logged into Plansight, you'll also see a badge on the task list in the left-hand navigation indicating how many quotes are in a non-complete status.
Quotes move through three statuses:
StatusMeaning
Pending
Default status for any newly uploaded or processed quote
In Progress
A user has manually marked the quote as actively being worked on
Ready for Review
The quote has been reviewed and is awaiting a peer review before completion
Once a quote is marked Complete, it is removed from the task list.
Tip: The Ready for Review status is designed for teams that follow a peer review process — allowing one user to flag their work for a colleague to verify before finalizing.
How to Recognize AI-Filled Fields
Anywhere Plansight has used AI to populate data, you'll see:
- A purple ribbon at the top of the panel confirms that Plansight processed the document
- Purple-highlighted fields indicate values that were extracted by AI
Always review AI-extracted fields for accuracy before marking a quote or plan as complete.
