This article explains how Plansight calculates Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) rates when your plans include multiple employee classes or age-banded rates. The video in this article shows the full workflow.
When you set up STD or LTD in an RFP, you might have one plan option with different classes—like regular employees and management. Each class can have its own benefit level, such as 60% to $3,000 weekly for one class and 60% to $5,000 weekly for another. But until a census is uploaded, Plansight doesn’t know how many employees are in each class or what their salary volumes are. You could calculate that manually, but it’s slow and easy to mess up.
Uploading a census makes this easy. Plansight provides a template with instructions, examples, and the required fields. For disability plans, the key fields are age, salary, and class. After you upload the census and match the headers (or skip that if you used the template), Plansight validates the data and flags anything that needs to be fixed.
Once published, the RFP will show a census summary: total employees, average age, average salary, and total salary volume. When you go to the illustration or quote pages, Plansight automatically:
- Calculates STD and LTD volumes
- Applies the correct age-banded or composite rates
- Generates PEPM and PEPY values for each plan and class
As shown in the video, this gives you a fast, accurate way to handle disability volume calculations without doing the math by hand.
